With the elections occurring, many undocumented immigrants have become the target raids. In recent news, ICE has targeted sanctuary’s where many immigrants seek for help. These individuals are fine up to $500,000. “Undocumented immigrants in the United States request refuge (or “sanctuary”) in churches or other houses of worship to avoid deportation. To date, nine people who have taken sanctuary in this manner, were targeted by ICE for fines of up to $500,000 each”.
Some individuals rely on going to these sanctuaries because they believe this is safe place. This action puts many people on edge; there should not be any raids in places where people should feel the “safest”. It is understandable that individuals who are being deported and fined have a criminal background but those who are innocent and are here to simply better their lives or escape persecution should be able to have a safe place.
