In a recent sit down with the Time Magazine featuring former President Donald Trump, the topic of what a potential second Trump term would bring, including the issue of immigration. Trump went into details regarding his plan to deport many millions of undocumented illegal immigrants.
Trump claims that many migrants are former prisoner or criminals that has been institutionalized in their previous country before immigrating. Research done by CNN has proven that there is no date to support the idea that the rate of crime in America is directly linked to the rise in immigrants. On the contrary, most measures of violent crimes in the United States have been falling.
Trump also refers to “Operation Wetback” during the Eisenhower Administration as a model, referencing the military-style tactics to remove Mexican immigrants- some being American citizens- from the United States. In 1954, law enforcement was sent to round up more than 1 million Mexican nationals and deporting them to the other side of the border, back to Mexico.
In his interview with the Time Magazine, Trump stated that he would target somewhere around 15 to 20 million undocumented immigrants in the US. Though, Pew Research Center estimated that the number of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. was only around 10.5 million as of 2021, contrary to Trump’s statement.
Rather than working with Democrats, Donald Trump prefers to militarize the issue, adding onto his statement “when we talk military, generally speaking, I talk National Guard.” Though he also states that he would “have no problem using the military, per se.”
“These aren’t civilians,” referring to undocumented immigrants, “These are people that aren’t legally in our country. This is an invasion of our country.”
