In a letter sent to the White House with more than 80 different signatures from lawmakers, including members of the Congressional Hispanic and Progressive caucuses, Democrats urges President Joe Biden to “take all available actions to streamline pathways to lawful status for undocumented immigrants.” Many are pressuring President Biden to take actions in order to put a stop to the record crossings along the southern border.
“Deporting all such individuals – as former President Donald Trump has threatened to do if reelected – would devastate the American economy and destroy American families,” they added.
The letter went on and suggest different steps in which they encourage the administration to follow. These steps would include streamlining the process by which DACA recipients, or immigrants brought to the country illegally as children, can seek to change to a nonimmigrant status. In addition, President Biden was also asked to unify families by allowing undocumented migrants with American spouses to seek parole on a case-by-case basis and reduce processing times for green card cases so that migrants may start looking for jobs.
In a statement by the chair of Hispanic Caucus, Rep. Nanette Barragan D-Calif. “Biden should seize this critical moment by exercising his Executive Authority to rebuild our broken immigrant system.”
NBC News also reported that President Biden is considering using executive power to constrict the numbers of migrants in the United States.
