Tension is rising at America’s border with Mexico as the number of aliens arriving at the border has skyrocketed in the recent years. As controversial as the topic of immigrant is, it is wide misunderstood by the general public. In order to truly grasp the migration problem in the United States, one must fully understand the root of the issue. The US immigration system was not designed to deal with this scale of migrants, ranging from people from all over the world, seeking asylum for their family.
During the recent pandemic, former President Donald Trump issued an order that would effectively shut down the border for the time being. Trump instituted the Title 42 policy, that would expel asylum seekers under the pretext of protecting American lives. When President Biden won the 2020 election, many migrants believed that the border situation would improve, however Biden continued to maintain Trump’s Title 42 policy for two years after taking office.
In May 2023, Biden terminated the national emergency as such, authorities recorded more than 300,000 migrant encounters by December 2023. In order to regulate the border, the Biden Administration instituted a rule that would allow immigration offices to reject migrants for number of reasons. Mexico has also stepped up on the migration enforcement, preventing people from traveling north. Mexico has also recently reached an agreement with Venezuela to deport its citizens.
It is reported that this year’s spring has been the quietest at the US southern border within the last four years.
