On top of its rather lengthy rulemaking process, the Biden administration has pledged a set of direct actions to help reduce the impacts of extreme heat on workers immediately. OSHA will surge enforcement in the investigation of complaints on days that the heat index breaks above 80 degrees Fahrenheit by deploying more inspectors and making sure employers are abiding by the safety standards. The Administration will further increase efforts in education to assist employers in preventing heat illnesses. These measures have been informed by state standards already in force across California, Washington, and Minnesota, which are proved successful in reducing heat-related incidents. Experts, however, point out that increased funding and enforcement personnel are needed to make these initiatives successful.
