WASHINGTON — The Department of Homeland Security has officially announced the commencement of the registration process for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ethiopia. A Federal Register notice has been posted, offering crucial information on how individuals can register for TPS under Ethiopia's recent designation. In October, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas declared an 18-month TPS designation for Ethiopia.
The registration process is set to begin on December 12, 2022. Individuals seeking TPS under Ethiopia's designation must file an application to be considered.
To qualify for TPS under Ethiopia's designation, individuals must demonstrate continuous residence in the United States since October 20, 2022, and continuous physical presence in the country since December 12, 2022. Those arriving in the U.S. after October 20, 2022, are not eligible for TPS under this designation and may face removal if they lack other authorization to stay in the United States. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) estimates that approximately 26,700 individuals may meet the eligibility criteria for TPS under Ethiopia's designation.
Individuals applying for TPS under Ethiopia's designation are required to submit Form I-821, Application for Temporary Protected Status, during the 18-month initial registration period, running from December 12, 2022, through June 12, 2024. Ethiopia TPS applicants have the option to file Form I-821 online. Additionally, when submitting a TPS application, applicants can request an Employment Authorization Document by including a completed Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, along with their Form I-821. Online submission of Form I-765 is also accepted.
For detailed information and assistance, applicants are encouraged to refer to the official documentation and guidelines provided by USCIS.
