The pathway of U.S. citizenship was backlogged during the Trump Administration, now facing significant delays for immigrants seeking naturalization. Trump's policies at the time, "It created a bottleneck in the system—frustration and uncertainty for too many." However, since accepted into office, President Biden has done a lot to cut down on these delays. His administration has reduced by half the average time it takes for applications to go through the process of citizenship, thus alleviating at least part of the backlogged burden that prospective citizens have faced, giving some relief to immigrant communities.
Part of the reason for the Trump-era backlog was related to more restrictive immigration policies and reduced resources for application processing. The Biden administration, however, has made it a priority to clear these backlogs, knowing the timely naturalization of those who help hold up American society. By increasing resources and streamlining processes, Biden has been able to increase efficiency within the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, making the pathway to citizenship more accessible and less burdensome.
This progress, at the very least, corrects some of the inefficiencies from the previous administration. It is also reflective of a much broader shift in the U.S. approach to immigration under Biden. Reduction in wait times and efforts by the administration to uphold the politics of opportunity and inclusive values that go to the very core of American identity. That backlog times are being reduced could mean a positive development for immigrants who have waited many years to have the opportunity of U.S. citizenship—a time of change, wherein the system of immigration is turning both compassionate and efficient.
Despite these successes, the issues are still not completely resolved. The Biden administration still attracts criticism that it can do more to reform all parts of the immigration system. Although the call for comprehensive immigration reform is still relevant, as this is a problem involving much more than naturalization, the advances made in slashing wait times for citizenship applications are milestones on which further reforms can be built. These efforts by the administration underline the continuing call for policies that will mirror the diverse and dynamic nature of the U.S. population.
Such a time reduction is not only an administrative improvement but involves real-life implications for immigrants and their families. Having accelerated the process of naturalization, more individuals under the Biden administration are being empowered to contribute to American life in full—in the sense that they can vote, obtain better benefits, and find belonging. The progress underscores how efficient and fair the immigration system must be in keeping democratic principles along the values of national cooperation and welcoming newcomers.
