Mexico offering assistance to Texas resident who are against SB4

SB4 is a bill in Texas that effectively bans sanctuary cities. This means that local governments are banned from preventing law enforcement from arresting illegal migrants in the country.

Texas’ leaders state that SB4 is a reactionary bill caused by inaction from the federal government to control migration in recent years. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data, 9.5 million migrants have come to the U.S. since the start of 2021. Tony Gonzales, United States Representative for Texas has stated that “Americans are fed up with President Biden’s broken immigration policies”

Alicia Bárcena, Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs recently stated that this law is “anti-immigrant”. She further stated that her country will not accept migrants from Mexico or any other countries that Texas attempts to send to Mexico. Deportation and Repatriation of Mexicans by the U.S. government will not be affected by this and Mexico will accept other migrants that are expelled by the U.S. under mutual agreements.

Bárcena said that Mexico and the U.S. can craft long-term solutions to the migration situation by addressing the root causes. She also states that Mexico is willing to become a “destination” for migrants from other countries who are in need of jobs.

Bárcena’s defense of undocumented immigrants could invoke more talks about SB4 in hopes of creating long-term solutions just like she hopes can happen one day.
