On June 8th, 2023, Colorado passed a bill that restricts local governments from detaining immigrants in their jails in place of federal immigration authorities. Governor, Jared Polis, signed House Bill 1100 which eliminates local governments' involvement in immigration detention. It also bans state and local governments from participating in any schemes or plans to detain immigrants with private prison companies.
This fight of the collaboration of ICE and local law enforcement agencies has been a huge battle over the years and it is now a step forward since this bill has been passed. Many people living in the state of Colorado without authorization will now be shielded from incarceration and deportation and get to experience the other changes the state has implemented such as opening housing benefits to all residents regardless of their immigration status and allowing noncitizens to obtain their driver's license.
