Spouse Immigration Reform

President Joe Biden is considering major immigration reform that would grant legal status to undocumented immigrants who are married to U.S. citizens. The step, intended for solving the legal limbo in which these people find themselves, might turn into an electively useful move to raise the liberal base and fix some of the problems that have been in the U.S. immigration system for a very long time.

A plan by President Joe Biden that will allow undocumented spouses to get legal status and obtain work permits so they cannot be deported is under consideration. This happens as a time Biden is set to face off in a reelection campaign against former President Donald Trump, notorious for his stiff position on immigration.

The move is likely to be announced at a White House event, which will strategically coincide with the anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA program. The DACA program, started under President Barack Obama, offers relief from deportation and work permits to those who were brought to the US as children.

This new policy could protect long-term U.S. residents who do not have legal status and address the humanitarian concerns resulting from family separation and uncertainties of law for the mixed-status families. There are close to 1.1 million undocumented immigrants who are married to U.S. citizens, and this initiative might turn their lives upside down by giving meaning to stability and security.
