An American South migrant detention facility has come under high scrutiny following accusations of abuse, medical neglect, and unsanitary conditions. Human rights organizations and legal groups have issued complaints, with detainees claiming mistreatment in the form of subpar medical care, overcrowding, and extended detention with no access to due process. The allegations have prompted federal investigators to open a formal probe into the operation and compliance of the detention facility with detention standards.
Those in favor of the investigation argue detention centers must be humane standards and that neglect or abuse of any sort is against U.S. law and international human rights legislation. Human rights groups are adamant that the majority of detainees are asylum seekers or individuals waiting to have their immigration heard, not prisoners, and should not be treated inhumanely. Legal experts have called for increased oversight and independent monitoring of detention centers to prevent further abuses.
Critics do argue, however, that increased scrutiny of detention centers could make it more challenging to enforce immigration law, and thus more challenging to regulate unauthorized migration. Some politicians believe humane treatment is worthwhile but detention centers must remain operational and secure so the enforcement can be adequate.
