The Trump administration has unveiled a new policy that makes it mandatory for all illegal aliens 14 years and older to register with the federal government. The program makes them submit biometric data, including fingerprints, and give personal information such as home addresses and work status.

In response to the uptick in immigration enforcement by the Trump administration, private contractor Geo Group has introduced a dramatic increase in surveillance capabilities. The corporation, already tracking approximately 186,000 immigrants through electronic monitoring technology such as ankle monitors and facial recognition technology, is moving to expand its capacity to monitor up to 450,000 individuals.

The Trump administration directed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to locate and deport unaccompanied immigrant children who fail to appear in immigration court. The policy marks a radical shift in enforcement priorities, since these children—many of whom are fleeing violence, poverty, and exploitation in their native countries—have long been afforded some legal protections as their asylum claims were pursued.

Cardinal Robert McElroy, who will soon be the new Archbishop of Washington, D.C., requested a greater humane immigration policy that values migrants' dignity. During a San Diego news conference, McElroy condemned recent policy changes authorizing immigration enforcement activity in churches and other sacred spaces.
