U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has announced that, starting April 1, applicants using Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, will have the option to request an original or replacement Social Security number (SSN) or card and update their immigration status with the Social Security Administration (SSA) without needing to visit an SSA office.
Noncitizens applying for naturalization using the updated edition of Form N-400 (dated 04/01/24) will be able to request an SSN or replacement card during the submission of Form N-400. New citizens may no longer need to physically visit an SSA field office to apply for an SSN or replacement card or to provide documentation proving their new U.S. citizenship status. However, note that SSA may request additional information if necessary.
Applicants using the previous edition of Form N-400 (dated 09/17/19) will not have this option, as the SSA questions are only included in the latest edition (04/01/24). The new edition of Form N-400 will be available for online filing on April 1. To file Form N-400 online, applicants must first create a USCIS online account, offering a secure and convenient method to submit forms, pay fees, and monitor the status of any pending USCIS immigration request. Setting up a USCIS online account is free and provides various features, including secure communication with USCIS through an inbox and online response to Requests for Evidence.
USCIS had previously announced its intention to expand the Enumeration beyond Entry program to include applicants applying for U.S. citizenship, as detailed in the Interagency Strategy for Promoting Naturalization: First Anniversary Accomplishment Highlights (PDF, 1.79 MB).
